What happens when you put a copper penny inside a tire's grooves? If much of Abe Lincoln's head isn't visible, the tire's treads are likely fine. When you see the bulk of Abe's head, then the tread depth may be well below 2/32 of an inch. Treads that go too low aren't safe to drive on, and the car's owner probably needs to buy new tires right away.

Treads wear down for many reasons. Poor wheel alignment, low levels of air, over inflation, and other causes may cause wear. Getting tires inspected may reveal the reason. Maybe the tires require replacing.

Over and underinflation might be correctable if the driver checks the tires' air pressure levels. Air pumps at gas stations have gauges connected to them. Drivers could purchase an inexpensive, easy-to-use tire gauge. Research the specific tires' suggested psi and then check them with the tool.
